The popularity of Maurice Wilks’s original post war concept has grown since the end of production of the last of the Defender series. The Series III will appeal to the true 4x4 enthusiasts, who will continue to enjoy the true off road capabilities of a ‘proper’ Landy and will appreciate the ease of maintenance, born from having to fix problems in deep jungle or baking hot deserts. Few vehicles have been so successful in the world of farming, construction and adventure and indeed the military have used them in all shapes and sizes. With Series I and II prices clambering up to dizzy heights, the Series III still offers a reasonable chance to own one of these amazing vehicles.

The current owner purchased this fine Series III four years ago as a project. Since then, it has undergone a thorough chassis-up restoration to a high standard and the result is a very presentable and desirable classic Land Rover. Work has included the fitting of a new galvanised chassis manufactured by Davey Chassis Ltd, a new bulkhead, new floors to the front and rear, two new doors (and door tops), new rear tub supports, new road springs and shock absorbers, a new carburettor and new fuel tank. The radiator, water pump and hoses are also all new, the braking system has been overhauled with new shoes, hoses and pipes, and we understand that the engine has been checked and rebuilt. The Land Rover sits on its original refurbished wheels fitted with new tyres.

The bodywork was completely resprayed in 2019 in Marine Blue and the finish is adequate. The panelwork is sound and solid, but not completely dent free. Two new front seats enhance the interior and the front carpets are new (with the original to the rear). The roof lining is new in cream. All instrumentation is understood to be in working order, and the cab is equipped with a radio. Equipment includes overdrive, a front centre cubby box, a very useful dog guard, rear seats, a tow bracket, a rear rubber floor mat and galvanised mesh lamp guards to the front and rear.

As the galvanised chassis has not been painted, if offers potential buyers the opportunity to inspect the clean underside! It can then be coated with something suitable, or not, depending on the vehicle’s future usage.

The comprehensive history file contains the current MOT test certificate, together with the V5C registration certificate and many, many invoices from the current ownership detailing parts procured for and money spent on the restoration.
