1954 Bentley R-Type Sports Saloon

PVO 775 was originally supplied to Rolls-Royce and Bentley retailers Bennetts Ltd of Nottingham and its first owner was a Mr P. E. F Clay of Elastic Yarns Ltd of Nottingham. A Dr Ward, a surgeon in Richmond, Virginia and a BDC and RROC (USA) member, purchased the Bentley in 1970 from Jack Barclay and had the motor car shipped to America. Dr Ward used the Bentley for tours, travelling without any problems, and it was kept in pristine condition. Whilst in his ownership, the engine, automatic gearbox, rear axle and braking system were overhauled and the radiator re-cored. Dr Ward sold the motor car to fund the purchase of a pre-war Bentley and so in 2015 and at a mileage of 58000, PVO 775 was repatriated to the UK.

During the current ownership of ten years, the Bentley has been the subject of a professional bare metal respray. All doors and fittings, the front wings, the sunroof, bonnet panels and boot lid were all removed for the work, and it is worth noting that the body was rust free and in superb condition. The radiator surround and number plate support were rechromed, and the original upholstery and interior trim was restored. The headlining and carpets are original.

Having been set up by Sigma Engineering, the R-Type performs superbly, the transmission is quiet and smooth as one would expect, the brakes are impressively punctual and when driven in hot weather, the engine runs at the correct temperature without over-heating.

PVO 775 has been a concours class winner on two occasions at the Sherborne Historic Vehicle Rally, and has won Best Post War Car at the 2018 Mendip Vintage and Classic Tour.

The large history file contains the factory build records, early service sheets, invoices, correspondence, the Virginia Certificate of Title and the V5C registration certificate.

This is a very reluctant sale for the owner. It would be difficult to find a better R-Type, therefore to all interested parties, we will advise prompt viewing before said owner changes his mind!
