The idea for the Volkswagen Caravanette is generally credited to Ben Pon, a Dutch importer of Volkswagens. In 1946, Pon travelled to Germany with the view of purchasing Beetles (the Type 1) to import to Holland. After noticing an improvised Beetle van, he realised that using the Type 1 floorpan, an improved version was possible. Arriving in 1950, the Type 2 was offered in a vast range of models. The original retained the Beetle’s 1200cc air cooled engine, but as the vehicle developed, engine sizes grew and handling and comfort improved. The third generation, or T3, first appeared in 1979 and was initially powered by the air cooled engine it inherited from its predecessor. Although much more modern in appearance, the T3 retained the quintessential Camper Van design and vibe, and keeps the same strong and loyal following today.

Here comes summer and your ticket to a taste of warmth thanks to this T3 Campervan, in need of some TLC, but with bags of potential for a VW enthusiast. It is fully equipped with an extended glass fibre roof and a small roof rack; it is generally in tidy condition and has had six previous owners. The odometer reads 99411 miles, but that cannot be verified. The interior is fully equipped and serviceable (there are covers on the front seats) and the bodywork does need some attention. It has arrived to us from a deceased estate and so regrettably there is no history but it does come with a V5C registration certificate. We have recently obtained a new MOT test certificate for the VW, but we would anyway advise the new owner to carry out a service before returning to the road. A usable and fun project.
