1966 Humber Sceptre Mk II

Arriving in 1963, the Sceptre was to be Humber’s last hurrah.  Traditionally well-appointed, the Sceptre was initially based on the Super Minx from Hillman and intended to be a replacement for the Sunbeam Rapier, explaining the more modern and sportier design. The Mk II of 1965 had a styling revision to the front end and a twin carb 1725cc engine. Just under 12000 units were produced before the Mk III came along in 1967.

GHY 700D has an interesting history. The motor car was purchased by the current custodian’s father in the late Sixties and used regularly until 1975 when it was put into storage. In 1997, father and son carried out a light restoration but the Sceptre was used very infrequently, only really driven to an MOT test every year. Sadly its owner passed away in 2017 and the motor car has again been in storage since, although the engine has been started regularly and the car moved from the garage thereabouts to maintain its mechanical health. It has been a hard decision to sell the Humber but the current custodian hopes that a new owner will be able to restore the motor car to its former glory.

In terms of its condition now, we are told that the chassis, underside, floor and boot panels are all sound and solid, and wax treatment has been applied to the underside. The bodywork is generally good and appears to be rust free and solid. The paintwork has seen better days and would ideally benefit from a respray. The brightwork is mainly serviceable, the rear bumper is misaligned. The black interior is original and is in reasonable order, although the tear in the driver’s seat could be rectified. The instrumentation is all working apart from the clock. Mechanically, a recommissioning service will need to be carried out but we have not been informed of any issues.  Given the Humber’s history, the low mileage of 67809 is presumed to be correct.

The history file contains DVLA correspondence, the original handbook, the last MOT test certificate (which expired in April 2020) and the V5C registration certificate. A Rootes factory workshop manual and a boot full of spare parts are also supplied.
