Inspired by the American Willys Jeep, the Rover Company introduced the Land Rover Series 1 80 inch in 1948. It was adaptable, durable and soon became a popular utility vehicle both in the UK and overseas. The Series II followed in 1958, initially with some cosmetic alterations, and then the Series IIA arrived in 1961. Powered by a 2.25 litre petrol engine, the IIA is considered by many to be the most durable Land Rover. These models have now become a cult classic – sought after by enthusiasts who find the vehicles equally suited to everyday use as they are to special occasions and historic rallies.
This ex-Army Series IIA 88 inch Land Rover, with a canvas, easily-removable top, was manufactured in 1971. It was sold by the Home Office and re-registered in 1976 and at some point, the traditional Army green paint was changed to Desert Sand.
Generally, the Land Rover is described as good. The canvas top was replaced by the previous owner, who also fitted the rear bench seats, which remain in good condition, as do the triple front seats.
Apart from some gearbox wear (which is to be expected on an old Land Rover), we are informed that the mechanics and the tyres are in good order.
This workhorse vehicle is supplied with the V5C registration certificate.
