1968 Bedford CA Dormobile Romany Motorhome

The Bedford CA was produced from 1952 until 1969 by Vauxhall Motors’ subsidiary, Bedford Vehicles of Luton. The model was supplied either as a light van with sliding doors, or as a chassis to which a variety of specialist bodies could be fitted, allowing the humble Bedford CA to be transformed into ice cream vans, ambulances and many other incarnations. The Dormobile Motorhome first appeared in 1957 and is now considered a design icon of its era.

There must be very few Bedford CA commercial survivors, let alone Dormobile Romany four-berth Motorhomes; certainly, the condition of this example would be difficult to repeat.

MCJ 247F was the subject of a sympathetic restoration from 2004. In 2007, the bodywork was restored , with new door weatherstrips fitted, and professionally resprayed. The underside was cleaned, painted and Waxoyled. The interior, including the seats and equipment, is largely original, but a new floor covering has been fitted and the extending roof refurbished.

We understand that a full mechanical check was carried out with the restoration, which included a braking system overhaul with the fitting of new pipes, hoses, wheel cylinders and a master cylinder. The Motorhome sits on its original road wheels and cross-ply tyres. For security, a battery master switch has been fitted.

The Bedford is supplied with a vast history file, containing amongst others several Dormobile sales brochures, interior trim brochures, price lists, operation instructions, data, invoices, a service book, the handbook, a BDC member’s book and old MOT test certificates.

Described as being very good in most departments, this super, rare Motorhome would be welcome at a variety of commercial and classic motoring events.
