After Ransom Eli Olds had experimented with steam and petrol engines, the ‘Curved Dash’ Oldsmobile arrived in 1901 and became the world’s first mass-produced motor car and for a few years, America’s highest selling model. The first Oldsmobiles were fairly fragile but the models of 1902 and later became more robust and were powered by 7hp engines supplied by Henry Leland, founder of the Cadillac Company.
This example was imported from Holly Springs, Mississippi in 2007 and since that time, a considerable amount of recommissioning has been carried out. The Oldsmobile has also undergone a series of improvements, which has included the regrinding of the crankshaft and the fitting of new white metal main bearings in 2015. The Edwardian motor car also benefits from an easy to remove and refit twin rear seat and tonneau arrangement, accommodating two or four passengers, which is possibly unique for a Curved Dash Runabout.
BS 8474 passed through two ownerships before the current custodian purchased the motor car in January 2017 and has clearly been well cared for. Cosmetically, it is in very good order and mechanically, we understand the motor car to be reliable; indeed, it has been a regular and successful London to Brighton participant, finishing in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018.
Accompanying the Oldsmobile is a box of spare parts, a box of literature and a history file containing the Veteran Car Company VCC Veteran Passport, the VCC Vehicle Identification and Dating Opinion Report and Certificate, copies of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run certificates, starting and driving instructions, a photocopy manual, maintenance information, technical data, a parts list, sundry invoices, a list of previous owners, correspondence, several MOT test certificates, a State of West Virginia Certificate of Title and the V5C registration certificate.
Ready to be enjoyed, this Curved Dash Oldsmobile is supplied with a transporter trailer.
