During the early 1930s there was a strong market for 10hp cars. Offerings came from many manufacturers such as Austin, Singer, Standard, Lanchester BSA and others, but Morris certainly took its fair share of the market with its well-built and nicely presented 10hp Saloon. Also available were a choice of other bodies on offer, one of which was the well-appointed Special Coupe.

This two-door coupe had accommodation for four within the faux cabriolet roof which, although not able to be opened in its entirety, despite the promise of pram irons, it boasted a large sliding sunshine roof. Quality was apparent, particularly in the interior with leather trim and a smart wood dashboard, well equipped with instruments.

This lovely and rare example appears hard to fault. The rich red and black paintwork is gorgeous and contrasts well with the red leather within. Closer inspection will reveal a small pillar mounted signpost lamp with rear view mirror, and a pair of really rare traffic light indicators, which few modern motorists will have ever seen and certainly will fail to comprehend.

Opening the engine bay reveals a clean and well- ordered picture. The 1292cc engine wears its mock overhead valve cover with pride and was rebuilt in 1999/2000 by Roy Bowden of Nailsea. A four speed manual gearbox is easy to master, if the central throttle pedal takes a little thought and concentration for the first few miles. Actual work on the engine included new big ends and crankshaft, plus hardened valves. The brakes were also overhauled and being hydraulic, were refilled with modern synthetic fluid. The crown wheel and pinion were also replaced.

This really well sorted motor car comes with a V5C registration certificate and three older ones, two books of The Morris Ten, two operation manuals, an information manual and an actual owner’s maintenance notebook for June 1999-2000. There is also a file of invoices for work carried out and a large quantity of spare parts will be included in the sale.

A wonderful opportunity which may well not knock twice.
