Launched at the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1965, the MGB GT complemented the MGB Roadster launched two years previously, and became a popular choice for those wanting a reasonably priced sports car with an added degree of practicality.  The GT V8 variant appeared in 1973 as a limited edition model. These were UK-only market motor cars and utilised the Rover V8 3528cc engine, which was inherited from the Rover P5B, and were able to achieve a top speed of 125mph and 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. Production ceased just three years later and today, the V8 is the more uncommon member of the ‘B’ family.

Purchased in 1980 by its current custodian, himself a motor engineer, this particular Wiltshire-registered BGT V8 was enjoyed as a hobby classic, participating in car club rallies and reliability trials. Initially, OAM 397M was also used as daily transportation for the custodian’s wife, until impending motherhood rendered the motor car impractical and difficult to drive. So, in 1993 the decision was made to put the MG into storage; as is often the case, time marched on and there the car remained, although fortunately it was in running order in 1993 and the garage was secure, light and well-ventilated. A recent inspection revealed that the interior has not suffered through lack of attention over that past twenty three years and appears to be in good original condition, requiring nothing more than a clean. The bodywork is seemingly solid, but the paintwork will need updating. An original engine compartment adds to the charms of the V8; all of the correct components appear to be present, but as the vehicle has not been started since 1993, attention to the mechanics may also be required.

A rare find, this interesting and worthwhile project has had just two owners and is supplied with its V5C registration certificate, a V5 document and the last MOT test certificate issued, dated 6 May 1992.
