Somehow it seems that the post war Mk VI and R-Type Bentleys offered a particularly well balanced means of dignified yet not too ostentatious arrival, maybe somewhat overstated by their later, more complicated brethren. These cars remain eminently useable and an absolute delight to own and drive.
OYK 763 looks to be an attractive opportunity to sample one of these in its most elegant form, the R-Type. Distinguished from the Mk VI by the larger rear boot, it has the powerful 4556cc six cylinder engine as found in the later Big Bore example and this, coupled with a smooth four speed automatic gearbox, provides a truly memorable motoring experience. Well balanced steering, servo brakes and fine suspension add to sheer pleasure of the ride. This is a driver’s car yet the sumptuous leather seats, fine carpets and walnut woodwork are guaranteed to cosset the passengers.
The Standard Steel coachwork is very nicely presented in recently refurbished Tudor Grey and Georgian Silver and there is a steel sunshine roof. The interior is indeed as described with rich burgundy leather and carpets. Even the folding picnic trays are in place in the back of the front seats. Lift the boot lid and the burgundy carpet is again present with what seems to be a full set of tools in their correct place. A glance under the bonnet will reveal a clean and tidy engine bay with inspection lamp in place and the correct glass windscreen washer reservoir.
During the current family ownership, the fuel system has been overhauled, an electronic ignition fitted, the cooling system has been cleaned and checked and the heater matrix replaced. The underside of the Bentley has recently been cleaned and rustproofed, and the coachwork checked for corrosion and rectified as required. The sunroof has also been removed and the runners cleaned and lubricated. The Bentley is equipped with new rubber stoneguards and a full service was carried out in January 2020.
