1990 Peugeot 205 Roland Garros Convertible

There are certain cars that truly epitomise the decade in which they were built; the Mini defines the Swinging Sixties and the Escort waves a flag for the Seventies. The same can be said for the Peugeot 205; few other mass production cars of that era can lay claim to being such a resounding success and in their design, exemplifying the hope and aspirations of the youth of the Eighties. First arriving in 1983, the 205 was a huge hit and managed to improve the fortunes of a rather conservative Peugeot. Power ranged from 954 to 1905cc and the well-designed body offered an ample boot space with sporting details and very good handling, due to in part the suspension: MacPherson struts to the front and torsion bar suspension to the rear. Such was the success of the 205 that Peugeot barely changed the styling throughout its production that lasted until 1998.

Of the variants offered by Peugeot, five hundred 205 ‘Roland Garros’ special editions  were manufactured. These models were well-appointed with a ‘push button’ electric hood, leather faced seats, electric front windows, tinted glass and central locking, with a 1360cc engine driving through a five speed gearbox.

This one owner example has been used sparingly in recent years, but has clearly been maintained to a very high standard and remains in original and good condition, even managing to retain a fully-functioning and easy to operate electric hood. Work in recent years has included an engine de-coke in 2010, the replacement of the exhaust system, a specialist gearbox overhaul and the fitting of a new clutch (the invoice for the latter two is included in the file). 

Described by the vendor as very good, we understand that the little convertible performs well and is a pleasure to drive; its arrival on the market is due only to its custodian’s desire to concentrate on his pre-war motor cars. The 205 was delivered to Dorset from its home in Cornwall, where it formed part of a small private collection.

The large history file contains amongst others a sales brochure, a period advertisement, maintenance and handbooks, all MOT test certificates, numerous invoices, a Peugeot Lioncare AA book and the V5C registration certificate.
