For eleven years from 1982, Ford produced the Sierra, a family estate car or hatch-back that boasted a modern aerodynamic design which, in all aspects, was a departure from its predecessor, the Cortina. The XR4i launched in 1983; a high performance variant which was powered by the Capri’s 2.8 litre Cologne unit. Two years later, the XR4x4 arrived. Based on the five door hatchback and initially retaining the 2.8 litre engine, this four wheel drive model was produced until 1990 in its original form. Despite the initial response from the press and public, the Sierra has become rather a cult classic and has gained a huge following, not least with those who prefer their transportation to be something of a statement.

We understand that this superb example with its revised 2.9 litre V6 engine has been treated to a seven thousand hour restoration. The vast level of work carried out included the fitting of a new factory body shell, a stainless steel exhaust system, AVO adjustable shock absorbers, central locking, electric windows, Recaro leather seats, a Cosworth steering wheel, an RS500 bonnet and grille, ST alloy wheels and an XR4i rear spoiler. The suspension was also uprated and the engine ‘blueprinted’. With just 1600 miles covered since the rebuild, we are informed that this XR has the feel of a new car and features the Ford EEC engine management and fuel injection system.

The attention to detail is exemplary; for example, the underside is better than new, with the rear axle, cross members and ‘A’ frames treated with a plastic coating. The standard of the restoration was rewarded with a first in class at the Ford Fair Concours at Silverstone. The motor car has never been taken out in the rain.

The history file includes numerous invoices, MOT test certificates, the V5C registration certificate, a handbook and a road test report featured in Classic Car Buyer.
