Raleigh began making mopeds in 1958 and when it became part of the Tube Investments Group in 1960 joined the already acquired firms of Norman, Phillips and Hercules. To rationalise production into a common product, a licence to build Mobylettes was negotiated with the French firm of Motobecane so from thereon these British bikes were Mobylettes, sharing a common frame and running gear. The Raleigh Wisp continued with an in house frame but with the French running gear. The RM5 thus had a Mobylette frame, 50cc Mobylette engine with single-speed automatic clutch, on a rigid frame with telescopic front forks and drum brakes.

This delight of a moped starts easily and runs sweetly and is in excellent order throughout, it has clearly been cherished; indeed, it has been the subject of a thorough restoration as carried out by the current owner. We are told that the Raleigh was stripped down to bare metal, primed and resprayed. The wheel rims were also resprayed and the wheels fitted with new tyres and tubes. New tank badges were also obtained. Mechanical work comprised of the fitting of new: cables, drive belt, speedometer, variator clutch unit, barrel and piston, carburettor, frame bushes and rear light.

The Raleigh is supplied with an original workshop manual, the original speedometer unit (confirming the current mileage) and the V5C registration certificate.
