The idea for the Volkswagen Caravanette is generally credited to Ben Pon, a Dutch importer of Volkswagens. In 1946, Pon travelled to Germany with the view of purchasing Beetles (the Type 1) to import to Holland. After noticing an improvised Beetle van, he realised that using the Type 1 floorpan, an improved version was possible. Arriving in 1950, the Type 2 was offered in a vast range of models. The original retained the Beetle’s 1200cc air cooled engine, but as the vehicle developed, engine sizes grew and handling and comfort improved. The third generation, or T3, first appeared in 1979 and was initially powered by the air cooled engine it inherited from its predecessor. Although much more modern in appearance, the T3 retained the quintessential Camper Van design and vibe, and keeps the same strong and loyal following today.

This very versatile useful vehicle could be used equally as an economic load carrying runabout, or for its intended purpose for weekends away or continental touring. The Caravelle is well-appointed, as one would expect, with additional fitted lighting above the cooker and the cabin area and a JVC radio system with supplementary speakers at the rear. The Camper’s equipment is all in working order, except for the water pump, heater and the fridge ignition.  The vendor has been very honest with the camper’s description; importantly the extended roof is leak free and apart from the odd rust spot which is possibly expected, the body is good and straight.  The upholstery and flooring is showing some signs of wear and tear, but we are assured that the vehicle mechanics and running gear are in good order.

Wisely, the lady owner had a Habitation Report and service carried out on 13/9/2016; this report is enclosed in the file, together with the VW Owner Manual, repair and technical data manuals, some invoices, MOT test certificates and the V5C registration certificate.
