The Bentley Arnage has an important place in the marque’s history - the model that new owners Volkswagen brought to the market at the turn of the century and also the car which VW realised required a reinvigorated 6.75 litre V8 engine in order to meet the message from enthusiasts that the first-used 4.4 litre engine was not up to the mark.
Saving the vigorous V8 40 years into its life gave it another 20 years to enthral us. And those who would love one of the ultra-expensive 25 final editions of the current Mulsanne to savour the engine, but don’t want to sell their souls to achieve it, can find what they desire in the Arnage Red Label, the most sought-after of the Arnage models which cost £120,000 when new.
This Red Label in the highly desirable Sherwood Green, with a cream hide interior coupled with practical green carpets with cream hide piping. The interior is in good condition with some patina to the driver’s seat, showing a desire among previous keepers to keep that delightful V8 exercised!
Recent bills that accompany the motor car reveal a £4,000 overhaul of the interior heating during 2018 allowing regular use in colder weather, although a quality car cover is included to protect it when at rest.
The Arnage is more durable than earlier Bentley models and currently represents excellent value. Study of Bentley T1, T2, and Silver Spirit-based Mulsanne values shows them rising for the very best examples. This later Arnage, with the re-engineered, less thirsty while more powerful, V8 and stronger body, therefore offers an opportunity to experience Bentley ownership from a period before the more numerous Continental GT arrived to steer the marque in a different direction.
The history file contains the aforesaid invoices, MOT test certificates, a handbook, the V5C registration certificate and other sundry paperwork, together with the original service book, which confirms that the Bentley was supplied new by S. P. Broughton and Co. Ltd, the Rolls-Royce and Bentley dealership of Cheltenham. The motor car was serviced by them until 2010, followed by Balmoral UK, also Rolls-Royce and Bentley official dealers, until March 2015. Since then, marque specialists have carried out the servicing.
