Austin’s ‘County’ collection of the Nineteen Fifties included the Somerset, Devon, Hereford and Hampshire, all strong and reliable motor cars many of which still survive, yet rare indeed is a Drophead Coupe example.

The Somerset Saloon appeared in 1952 but it was another year before the DHC was offered at the Earls Court Motor Show. The pretty design incorporated a clever three position Coupe de Ville style vinyl roof which could be fully closed, fully open or open only over the front seats.

The two door coachwork was built by Carbodies. After 7000 models were manufactured, with most being exported to the USA, Australia and South Africa, production ended in 1954, so here is an opportunity to acquire an easy to maintain Austin motor car but a rare offering indeed in Drophead Coupe form, with just fifteen believed to be in existence in the UK.

This lovely Somerset started life in Stockport, eventually ending up with the current custodian’s late husband in Dorset in 2014. It is in very good condition throughout and difficult to fault. The interior appears to be original and is in excellent order. Instrumentation is present and correct. Mechanically, there are no known faults and although the engine size is 1200cc, the motor car is certainly no slouch.  We understand that this year, maintenance has included the fitting of new front shock absorbers.

The history file contains the V5C registration certificate, an RF60 registration book from 1953, a handbook for the Austin 10/4, an Austin 10 schedule of charges from 1937,  two Austin A40 models maintenance book (one from 1952), old road tax discs, service manuals for the A40, a sales brochure for the A40 Somerset Convertible, MOT test certificates from 1971 and the 1990s, parts lists and brass rally plaques, together with numerous copies of Austin Counties Car Club magazines, including from 2000 featuring this car on the front cover, and copies of Practical Classics and Popular Classics, both of which also feature this motor car.
