The Stevens Screw Company Ltd had a fine reputation for quality engineering and built its first motorcycle in 1897 using a Mitchell engine imported from the USA. The Stevens family soon developed their own engine designs, some of which were sold to Sunbeam, Wolf and Clyno.

A.J. Stevens & Co (AJS) was founded in 1909 in Retreat St, Wolverhampton and built motorcycles until sold in 1931. The name continued to be used by Matchless and Norton Villiers, and motor cars were produced briefly too, together with a three wheeler commercial van around this time.

This lightweight Bournemouth registered 350cc motorcycle has been in the current ownership since 1985, and with only two recorded former keepers, it has clearly been slumbering for many years, but we are told that it was running when placed into store.

Absolutely charming in appearance, this AJS is offered with pillion seat and tool bags, and the optional lighting equipment. Careful re -commissioning rather than drastic restoration should produce a truly vintage motorcycle with enormous appeal within the ‘oily rag’ fraternity. A V5 registration document is supplied, together with correspondence relating to the re-registering of the vehicle in 1980.
